PURPOSE
The purpose of an internship program is to provide another avenue to enhance the academic, intellectual, technical and personal skills of students. An internship placement should have a direct correlation to a student’s career goal. It should provide opportunities for observing, performing hands-on-tasks, attending meetings and being involved in the decision-making process, if appropriate. The intern may spend most of the time working with one resource person within an organization or several people in a variety of departments.

PURPOSE

It should provide opportunities for observing, performing hands-on-tasks, attending meetings and being involved in the decision-making process, if appropriate. The intern may spend most of the time working with one resource person within an organization or several people in a variety of departments.
INTERN’S ROLE
The following requirements must be met for a student intern to earn credit for an internship:
- Complete 135 hours of internship experience over 18 weeks. Individual contracts will determine the number of weeks required. An internship can be paid or unpaid.
- Submit weekly hours completion online, and a monthly timesheet signed by the worksite supervisor.
- Submit all required forms.
- Conform to all internship and community sponsor policies.
- Submit a weekly journal of work experience.
- Provide transportation to and from the internship site.
- Submit proof of learning at the end of the semester (will be explained by the Career Development Coordinator (CDC)) to document and demonstrate internship experience.
- Follow all Craven County Schools Board of Education policies during internship experience.
PARENT/GUARDIAN’S ROLE:
- Support the student in carrying out their duties and responsibilities.
- Assume responsibility for the student’s conduct and safety when traveling between school, the internship site and home.
- Carry adequate medical, accident and automobile insurance on the student during the internship.
- Direct all questions concerning the student’s internship site to the Career Development Coordinator (CDC).
- Understand that the student must attend work regularly and during the time period arranged for the internship.
- Understand that the student must report to work in a prompt manner.
- Agree to contact the CDC with any concerns about the internship experience.
EMPLOYER'S ROLE:
- Provide a job description for the internship placement.
- Interview the student prior to beginning the work experience.
- Provide a variety of work experiences that will help the student reach his/her career objectives.
- Provide work experience for the student for a minimum of 135 hours.
- Provide equipment and materials needed to perform the assigned duties.
- Evaluate the intern every nine weeks using the provided rubric, and complete and submit a final evaluation of both the intern and the program at the end of the experience.
- Sign monthly timesheet and discuss with student if discrepancies exist.
- Communicate either in person/by phone/via e-mail with the Career Development Coordinator on the worksite to discuss the student intern’s progress and any concerns.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR’S ROLE:
- Develop a student-learning plan
- Assist with appropriate internship placement
- Visit, phone or meet as needed with the student, employer and parents
- Assist with student’s learning problems at the internship site
- Help evaluate the intern; administer credit at completion of the internship
- Keep accurate records pertaining to the student and the school
- Provide the student with all necessary program rules, regulations, and required forms
- Guide the student in preparation of the required portfolio and portfolio presentation
